INTERVIEWS

An interview with Dylan in one of America’s oldest sporting publications.

Dylan Tomine said the name of his book. I asked him why he chose that title. He repeated headwaters out loud not because he was thinking of an answer, but because the title and the word have meaning. “Headwaters, to me is all about tracing the beginning of something.

Dylan sits down to talk with Dad Gear Review about his new book “Headwaters,” and a life lived outdoors

Fly-fishing is synonymous with road trips, and road trips are synonymous with music. In every issue, we ride shotgun with selected anglers and let them pick the tunes. This summer, the American writer Dylan Tomine was behind the wheel.

Superfolk interviews Dylan about what he learned from his mother growing up, the similarities between the weather in Ireland and that in his native Pacific North West, his friendship with Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and how spending time with his children has changed as they have gotten older.

PODCASTS

In this episode of WAYPOINTS, host Jim Kug is joined by Dylan Dylan joins host Jim Klug to discuss his new book, “Headwaters: The Adventures, Obsession and Evolution of a Fly Fisherman,” and to talk steelhead, the life of a fly fishing bum, fish advocacy, Patagonia’s famous “Don’t Buy This Jacket” campaign, the politics of hatcheries, and the impacts of fishing travel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Dylan and thought it was the perfect mix of sobering analysis of the state of the West’s fisheries combined with optimism and solutions for solving the challenges. He also offers up plentiful hilarious and insightful stories from his life on the water. We obviously talk a lot about his new book “Headwaters,” as well as his previous book called “Closer to the Ground.”

A great chat about guiding, writing, the goods and bads of pandemic living, the documentary "Artificial" and the cost of hatcheries, and the culinary versatility of salmon eggs.

In the 18 years that have gone by since Dylan last fished the Skykomish, wild Steelhead populations have all collapsed.  In this episode, Dave convinced Dylan to take a trip down memory lane, to float the Sky, do a bit of fishing, talk about what has changed, and the future of wild steelhead. This one is emotional, thought-provoking, and at times pretty funny.  Join us for a day on the Skykomish with Dylan and Dave as Dylan returns at long last to his home waters.

In this episode we talk about protecting resources, shifting baselines, having difficult conversations, the threats caused by polarization, steelhead, and legendary fly fishing authors. Tomine's new book Headwaters is available for pre-order and will be released later in April.
